New Custom PC Build For Editing!

New Custom PC Build For Editing!

Hey guys!

Hope everyone is safe and well during these uncertain times due to COVID-19 and you’re all making the most of lockdown like me.

So far I’ve given this website a much needed overhaul, picked up a new hobby in the form of guitar and salvaged old footage to create new memories.

I also took the plunge and made the switch back to PC - here’s why…

Up until now, I’ve done all my photo & video editing on a range of MacBook’s. First was a 2013 MacBook air which was fine for some light photo editing but when I decided to get back into video I quickly made the upgrade to a 2017 MacBook Pro.

That’s where I’ve stayed until now but I’d been looking at upgrading again since the MacBook Pro struggles with anything over 1080p videos or clip heavy sequences. Since getting into YouTube my goal has been to up my production value and skillset in video editing and so recently I was looking at where to go next hardware wise.

Looking at a fully decked out MacBook Pro made my eyes water when I saw the price so I decided to check out what I could potentially switch to in the PC world.

Luckily I have a mate who’s a complete G when it comes to computers and he quickly spec’d up a custom build PC that he said would beat even the best MacBook Pro hands down. To my surprise, when he sent me the basket link, the cost of the build came to just shy of 1400 pounds, just under half of what I was looking at spending on a newer MacBook pro with less spec!

Without too much further thought I hit purchase and this is what I ended up with:

  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Eight Core 4.4GHz (Socket AM4) Processor

  • Motherboard - MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI (AMD AM4) DDR4 X570 Chipset ATX

  • RAM - Team Group 8Pack Edition 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C16 3600MHz Dual Channel x 2

  • GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus XS OC 6144MB GDDR6 PCI-Express

  • PSU - Super Flower Leadex III 850W 80 PLUS Gold

  • SSD - Gigabyte 480GB SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive x 2

  • Case - Kolink Inspire Series K4 RGB Midi Tower Case

It took me around four stressful hours to build the bloody thing with virtual help from my mate but we got there eventually as you can see from the below images…

It took me the rest of the evening to get it all up and running and the next morning to get all my software installed that I frequently use for editing etc.

Once all that was sorted I decided to test it out by opening Premiere Pro and throwing in a 5 minute 4k 30fps clip, adding some effects and a colour grade then rendering it out in UHD for YouTube.

On my Mac there’s no way I’d have been able to scrub through 4k footage at full resolution let alone play it back without any issues. On this PC build playback was smooth and it there was very minimal lag when scrubbing, though this could be solved through some tweaking of settings.

Now for the render time; the total size of the file was 1.5GB, which would normally take me around 45mins or so on my MacBook. The PC did it in 6mins20s - I was blown away and it justified my decision to make the switch.

I’m really looking forward to the lockdown lifting so that I can get back out there and start creating some much more epic videos than I’ve been able to before.

If you’re interested in any further thoughts on this PC build or have any questions, feel free to drop me an email using this contact form.
